Easter Camp 2008

Hot weather, light winds and solid swells set the scene for an awesome 08’ Surffest at Taras this year – reports say it was the hottest Easter seen around the country in ten years. Not only did we score solid point breaks all weekend but everyone was stoked (including the grommies) with Back Beach and Oakura producing the goods too. And even when it got solid, re-forms at the beaches made for some wicked close up surf photography - check out some of the shots.

This year we had around 160 people from as far as Whangarei and Wellington, with older crew bringing their kids into CS. This of course is encouraging, seeing a new generation pumped for Jesus to surf and serve. The Skate Ramp proved popular, this time indoors under the marquee all weekend, with a comp held on the Saturday night for guys, girls and grommies and cool prizes - thanks to local sponsors ‘Seasons’. The local Taras CS team went hard out all weekend with team challenges (including tug of war), touch rugby on the beach, learn to surf and a full on serious table tennis challenge. Not too many injuries over the weekend, but we did see some cool hill sliding, ramp bails and tarp trampolining. No need for the planned retro contest as crew were just keen to hang out, surf lots and make the most of the beautiful beach right next to surf.

Hot food helped raise funds for the Fiji Mission in May, piloted by Taranaki Christian Surfers with LifeFM supplying ‘Up-And-Go’ and some sponsored Mountain Dew got in too. It was cool to partner with YWAM DTS students who gave it their all, helping out with the burger Stand, canteen, prayer teams, providing technical support for sound and getting into the learn to surf themselves.

Key note speaker Alan Vink provided inspiring Easter messages on the centrality of the Cross and our need to remember to take up our Cross daily. The world is a mad, sad place, yet hope is what we can offer as Christians. He also shared about the Prodigal Son and as part of his talk he invited his wife Jeanette to share her personal journey – fantastic! This was all backed up by an awesome Christian Surfers semi-acoustic worship team busting out some fantastic sounds – stoked!

Easter simply went orrrrfffff!

Thanks again to all for your support, great to see heaps of helping hands to make it all happen, and so many stoked on God!
