Wairarapa Comp - Review

On the morning of the competition the crew arrived at Petone Bowl Carpark at 6am expecting the worst, due to small swell predictions. However, the swell was supposed to increase in the afternoon which us a small glimmer of hope. We convoyed to Castle Point and set up the comp at ‘The Gap’ in front of some good looking 1-2 metre waves. The wind was cross shore, yet the waves maintained a decent shape, peeling right and left from the middle of the bay.

With crews from Wellington, Taranaki, Auckland and Mount Maunganui we were set for a competitive day of surfing. The competition lasted all day with a high level of surfing; some powerful turns, floaters and even the occasional barrel. “Rob - the Soup Guy” warmed our tummies again, and Peoples Coffee kept us awake with freshly brewed Fairtrade coffee. Lunch was ‘on the house’ with barbequed sausages, and the Comp rolled on into the semi’s and finals. Some of the best surfing was seen during the heats, but it was a close battle for the top three positions in the final.

Thanks to our sponsors there were some great prizes to give away, and everyone was stoked with such a fun time and that the sun had kept shining all day. Finally, thanks was given to everyone who helped make it happen, and those with four-wheel drives got on the road…while the rest of us waited to be towed from the sand.

Overall it was a great day with an excellent standard of surfing, fun times chatting, eating and hanging out at the beach. All profits are donated to Surf Aid International (www.surfaidinternational.org) and contribute towards their work in Indonesia and the Mentawai Islands .
