In late March the Titahi Bay Christian Surfers were contacted by Surfing New Zealand saying that no one from Wellington could hold the Wellington Scholastics this year and "would we be able to run it?" Being the cool team that we are, we said "Sure thing!", and in two and a half weeks we managed to pull it together (we didn't have long as the team needed to be selected for the nationals which was 2weeks after the contest).
The comp was scheduled to be March the 31st at Either Titahi bay or Lyall bay Wellington, but at 6am Saturday morning it was easy to see there were no waves. So it was posponed to the Sunday. Sunday Morning failed to supply us with waves on the West or South coast, so the call was made for the East coast. Parents wern't very happy but the grommets loved the idea of a roady.
We arrived at Castle point main beach to find clean 1-3ft offshore A-frame waves, perfect for young and older and easy to judge. Truely blessed! way better than 1ft onshore west coast.
Eatbourne Surfriders came along a and helped out with jusging and even brought along Silas Hanson-proffessional photographer from NZ but lives in Fiji most of the time, he took some sick photo's of the day which you can see on primophotos.com
The contest ran extremely well. Not only great surfing, but we also had running races, hand stand competitions, three legged races tied together with leg ropes, rubbish pick ups and boulder holding comps.
A very successful day. A huge thanks to our sponsors - Jedidiah clothing, DVS shoes, RPM, Mountain Dew, SPT tie downs, RealSurf, Jesus Christ!
