TORA, WAIRARAPA
28-29 JUNE
BY Brendan Hull

JUNIOR SURFER TAKES OUT CHAMPIONSHIP

Freezing conditions and forecast strong winds for Saturday couldn't dampen spirits for the second Jesus H2 Series contest. So with faith and prayer, the mobile entourage made the trek to the Wairarapa coast where Tora played host to more than 50 competitors and organisers. Cloudy conditions, light side-offshore winds and shoulder to head-high waves set the scene for a good day of competition at the 2-Star rated event.

Taranaki surfer - Blanton Smith surfed his way to a double victory under the H2 contest format.  Smith's competition proved too tough for his rivals as he went on to win the Championship division to gain 10,000 series points and a solid prize package. His double victory was made complete with the award for highest placed Junior in the event.

No love was lost between Jacky and Rosie Stewart as they surfed their way into the Championship Division. The sisters created quite a stir as they out performed many male rivals in the event. Jacky advanced through to the semi finals of the combined gender event winning the award for highest placed woman.

The Championship and Plate divisions allowed elite and amature surfers alike to advance through to later rounds which created a high level of participation and fun for many. The day was capped nicely with prize giving at sundown where generous sponsorship mean't over a third of the competitors received prizes. Next it was back to Wellington where World Vision presented their mission and new surf movie The Outsiders was shown. Free pizza was a welcome sight for hungry and tired surfers.

On day two Titahi Bay turned on 5 feet of overhead surf for the novelty Skins Division. Twenty keen surfers braved the stormy conditions with local surfer - Paul Carrington won the most heats in a row and took home cash and RPM snowboarding pants for his efforts.

Thanks to our series sponsor RPM Boardwear, also to event sponsors Reefside surfshop in Lyall Bay, DVS Shoe Company, the Bible Society in New Zealand. A huge effort from the local Christian Surfers clubs and the DTS team - thanks crew and most importantly, thanks to Jesus Christ who is more than worthy of all our efforts.

The next contest in this year's Jesus H2 Series will be in Hawkes Bay on 6-7 September.  For current series pointspictures and info on future contests go to our website www.christiansurfers.org.nz
