The H2 Format - How It Works
The first round is called the Qualifying Round. It is divided up into heats of 4, 5 or 6 (depending on entries) which are randomly drawn out of a hat. These heats are12 to 15 minutes long and you are only allowed to catch 3 waves. Once you have caught your 3 waves you must leave the water within 1 minute or you will register a -2 point penalty. If you take a 4th wave you will register a -2 point penalty. Our judges will score your 3 waves and at the end of the heat your total score will be posted on the board.
At the end of the qualifying round the competitors in the top 50% of scores will advance to the championship round and the other 50% to the plate round. If the ideal number of competitors is 48 then we would have the top 24 in the championship round and the bottom 24 in the plate round. So no matter how good or bad you surf, you’ll still get a second crack at it.
When we start the Championship and Plate rounds we repeat the same format as the qualifying round however this time you are allowed to catch 4 waves and can throw your worst one away. The same penalty’s apply if you catch a 5th wave or don’t come in immediately. This time the aim is to finish in the top 12 as these will be the only surfers to go through to the quarter finals. We also run through the plate round at this stage. The top 12 qualifiers from the plate will also get to compete in their own quarters.
From here we run through the quarters, semis, and finals. Once again for the quarters and semi’s we will be using the H2 format i.e. Top 6 scores qualify for the semi’s then top 4 qualify for the final. Everything will be clearly written on the board so you can understand what is going on. Basically the whole concept of this contest is participation and fun so get into it.
A Few Other Points · Interference will only be called if a competitor clearly interferes with the line of another competitor. The penalty will be -3 points & an extra wave will be awarded to thecompetitor who is interfered with . · Unless the surf is huge and/or we are surfing a reef, all the heats will be beach starts. · Remember the penalty for catching an extra wave is -2 points. · The judging criteria will reflect the degree of difficulty involved. If you do decide to go for a “reverse backflip aerial 720 to rock bonk’ and happen to pull it off then you will be rewarded accordingly. However a length ride without many manoeuvres wont score much. · The Skins event will be man on man heats and could be as short as 8 minutes long depending on conditions. Again random names are drawn from a hat and the winner of the heat heat becomes the challenger for the next heat.
